iCloud Drive Support/Sync?

Post by ScubaGuy » Thu Sep 25, 2014 10:27 pm

Quick question: is iCloud Drive syncing coming with the release of OS X 10.10 Yosemite, scheduled for October? It would make life a lot easier in syncing DiveLogDT with multiple iOS devices (iPhone, iPad). Thanks for a quick update.

iCloud syncing between Dive Log on iOS and any desktop application running on the Mac has some challenges that have to do with the way that iCloud is permitted to work between applications that are published by different developers (from Apple's point of view Dive Log and all the other desktop options, including Dive Log DT, are published by different developers). It is unclear at this time if iCloud Drive will change this relationship. The current mechanism that Dive Log on iOS uses for iCloud Synchronization (know as "Documents & Data") can work between iOS and the Mac, but is limited by the afore mentioned restrictions. We are investigation the options for easier synchronization between iOS and Dive Log DT on the Mac (including what implications the changes that Apple is making to iCloud have on that option) but don't have anything specific to offer at this time. We certainly appreciate the desire for a more seamless option and will make something available as soon as it is technically feasible.

Sorry that I don't have a more definitive answer available for you right now.

Cheers,

Greg

use the permission system - evernote, dropbox, etc works the same way .. I have apps using evernote or dropbox (different developer) and all I have to do is set-up permission and it goes fine.

Thanks for your input. iOS 8 and the (as yet unreleased) Yosemite do provide some different options for developers when using iCloud. It does require a redesign of the current iCloud support in Dive Log and is not backwards compatible with iOS 7 or Mavericks. As they say, it is "a simple matter of programming" :-)

Cheers,

Greg
