Locations without GPS

Post by wgcaldwell » Tue Sep 03, 2013 8:20 am

I am interested in using the locations feature but don't use GPS. Is there any way of simply adding the flag to the actual location by using the map?

Funny you should ask. We just released a new version of Dive Log Manager and one of the new features is a way to lookup the GPS co-ordiates of a dive site and fill it in. You can do it one of three ways:
1. Use DiveBoard.com's database of dive sites to lookup the sites GPS location
2. Use Google's geocoding information to lookup the sites GPS location
3. Use a map (google) so select precisely where the site is

This should make it easier to fill in the GPS location for your sites. This requires the licensed version of Dive Log Manager/Dive Log DT as this is "editing" a dive site. You just select the locations panel, select the site from the list, and then when you go into Editing mode, click the "Lookup" button. Another window will come up and you can try out all 3 methods and select which one works best for you. The lookups by dive site name are not always successful and so you can click on the links for them (open's in a browser) to see if they are what you want before choosing them. Also, the coordinates listed are not always correct either. So use the map as a fallback if you don't get what you want.

Everyone - Please send us feedback on this and let us know what you think and if there is something missing that we could add.
Cheers!

yay updates, I always get excited when this happens :)

to wgcaldwell, an easy way to get the gps location via google maps is to just bring it up on the map, and then rightclick >> Whats Here?

Then the gps co ordinates will be displayed in google maps search bar. Then just punch them in to your dive site, and voila!

Thanks Phil for sharing the technique!

And that is pretty much exactly what Dive Log Manager/Dive Log DT does now in the popup window. In the "Map" tab, it just puts the google map up and you put the cross hairs where the site is, and then DLM just saves those co-ordinates in the dive site info.
